What is a Policeman? by Paul Harvey - Bonus Ep 17
Paul Harvey was a radio personality who had a profound impact on me when I was growing up. He would tell the news, add his own commentary, and share one of his famous "the rest of the story" tales. He also occasionally narrated essays, like the one I'll be reading today. Paul Harvey was a huge influence on my speaking style, especially his use of dramatic pauses, seamless segues, and conciseness.
The essay I'll be reading today is "A Policeman." It's a topic that was close to Paul Harvey's heart, as his own father was a police officer who was murdered when Paul was just three years old. I've edited the essay slightly to modernize a few bits of his mid-20th century vocabulary, but I've resisted the temptation to mimic Harvey's voice and exact cadence. Otherwise, the text of the essay is unaltered, and I will read it as Harvey did when it was broadcast decades ago.
I hope you enjoy.
In addition to the above, here are some other facts about Paul Harvey:
- He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1918.
- He began his radio career in 1939.
- He hosted his own radio show, The Rest of the Story, from 1965 until his death in 2009.
- He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
- He is considered one of the most influential radio personalities of all time.
